Global Leadership Program
I participated in five colloquiums to gain the sense of a global leadership as following;
Three Core Workshops: Leadership in a Global Context, Beyond Borders: Becoming a Global Citizen, and Cross-Cultural Understanding
Two Elective Workshops: Active Listening and Teaching English as a second language
I pick out two most impressive colloquiums for me and post reflection briefly here.
Cross-Cultural Understanding
October 2th, 2018 5 p.m.- 7.p.m at Foust 201
“What is culture? What is cultural understanding?”
Subjective/Objective culture
O: What human beings make, and pass on from generation, such as music and art.
S: The learned and shared patterns of beliefs, behaviors, and values of groups of interacting people.
The Cultural Iceberg (other cultural analogies: onion, eyeglasses, fishbowl. And tree ⇒ What we (can) see is the part of the overall.
As a summary, we concluded intercultural development (1) requires self-awareness, (2) requires ongoing intercultural learning, (3) is crucial in today’s world, and (4) is a life-long process.
As a global reader, it is a significant role to encourage people to cultural understand in group, society, or organization, therefore, we should be willing to be aware of cultural differences and commonalities and promote cultural learning eagerly. Personally, I will be able to have broader perspective of cultural understanding and bigger tolerance to accept various culture based on my experience at UNCG as an exchange student and given lessons from GLP.

Global Leadership Effectiveness
We concluded we should 1) seek those who run counter to stereotypic view, 2) increase contact with groups of people outside of your own demographics, and 3) try to think things from the perspective of others to keep educating yourself and being accountable as a global leader.
One of the important things to be a global leader is to recognize your own identity because everyone has own story and it means value vary from person to person. What is significant in the workshop is Social Perspective Taking (SPT). It refers the ability to tale another person’s point of view and accurately infer thoughts and feelings of others. To improve the skill, you should walk yourself through others’ point of view when faced with a problem/issue and seek to understand and explore viewpoints different than your own.
That’s why, global leaders should keep educating yourself and being accountable. And, they should take actions; seek those who run counter to stereotypic view, increase contact with groups of people outside of your own demographics, and try to think things from the perspective of others.
